Papier mache is a fantastic craft project for kids that allows for individuality and creativity to shine through. Most papier mache recipes call for a messy mixture of flour, glue and water, but using liquid starch is much easier, faster and less messy. Cut the large plastic bag so that it will cover the surface you will be using, and tape it to that surface. Pour the starch into bowls (one bowl for every two people) and tear the newspaper into long strips about 2 inches wide. Blow up the balloons and tape them together so that you have the shape you want. Most people will choose an animal shape for this project. Dip the newspaper in starch so that it is completely covered. Lay the wet strip onto the balloon. Continue this process until your entire balloon shape is covered in newspaper. This is your first coat of papier mache. Add two to three more coats after this. Tear strips of white paper and dip them in starch.
