A wooden pool deck finish is subjected to wear from traffic and pool chemicals in addition to the normal deterioration imposed by weather. Typical decks require refinishing every three years. Painting deck wood allows the option of choosing a color. Paints are specially formulated for decking that protect the finish against moisture and foot traffic so it can last for at long as possible. Choose the right paint and add a splash of color to your pool deck next time it needs refinishing. Clean the surface of the decking and remove the deteriorated finish. Scrape away old paint or stain with a putty knife. Cut a small “X” into the remaining painted surface with a pocket knife and cover the etching with a piece of tape. Rip the tape away and inspect it to see if any paint peels off on the adhesive. If there is paint on the tape, then the finish is badly weathered and should be sanded off.
