Painting the wood deck on an outdoor pool is a task that requires precautions be taken so as not to damaged the wood or the pool. If the right steps are taken and the right tools used, this can be a good do-it-yourself project. A good annual paint job is sure to produce a lovely look to accompany the sparkling water of your pool. Drain the pool completely. Remove all deck chairs, tables, plants and any other objects from the deck. Pressure-wash the deck thoroughly to remove all dirt and debris. Allow the deck to dry completely. Cover the entire area around the deck, including the interior and edges of the pool, with painter’s tarp or drop cloths. Apply the deck cleaner or wood brightener to the surface of the entire deck. Paint two coats of primer on the deck once the wood brightener or cleaner has set, using rollers for the large area of the deck and a paintbrush for the steps and railings, if present.
