With some shellac, latex paint, a bevy of brushes, and some good sanding, you can have your bookshelf looking fresh, stylish, and like new. Use a screwdriver to disassemble the bookshelf as much as you can. This will make sanding, priming, and painting much simpler and thorough. Sand the cabinets down using a 220-grit sanding block or a sheet of 220-sandpaper, using a circular motion for the greatest effect. This gets rid of any old finishes or stuck-on dirt that could interfere with the application of paint. Wipe down the various pieces of the bookshelf with a clean tack cloth to remove any particles or dirt from the sanding.
