**As an oil painting instructor, one of the things that I find many new students are put off by is the cost of stretched canvases. For some, the cost of the lessons added to the expenses they incur for supplies and tools are discouraging if they are pinching pennies. New painters are many times intimidated by putting a paint-filled brush on a new canvas. **I have discovered a little cost saving process that is very popular with my students — using economical canvas paper in place of stretched canvas. Whenever they are painting class exercises or producing practice paintings that are not designed to be ‘keepers’, using canvas paper is very cost efficient. **For those who might not be familiar with canvas paper, it can be purchased from any art supply company in pad form in a variety of sizes.
