In some cases (particularly in older buildings) the closet shelves may not be removed easily. In this case you’ll have to paint them inside the closet. Select the paint for the shelves. Prime the shelves first. Obtain matte primer from a local hardware store. Purchase laminate paint in the color you desire from a local hardware store. Laminate paint protects against mold and bacterial growth, so it is ideal for shelving in linen closets. Remove the shelves from the closet if this is possible (if not see step 3). Place them on a flat surface on top of a layer of newspaper so as not to paint anything you don’t want to. Using primer, paint one side of the shelves and all of the edges.
