How Do You Paint Latex Over A Vinyl-Clad Door?
The big worry with painting vinyl doors is adhesion. Will the paint adhere to the vinyl? The answer to this is that it can if you use a good quality primer first. Try this without a primer and paint will usually peel pretty quickly because vinyl is such a slick surface. A good primer will create a more suitable surface for the paint to stick to. In some situations — if the vinyl is exceptionally smooth and high-gloss, for instance — you may need to lightly sand the surface first before priming and painting. In many cases, however, this step won’t be necessary. Clean the vinyl surface with a wet sponge dipped in soapy water. Use a towel to dry well before continuing. Open windows and other doors to ventilate the room. Cover door hardware (screws, latches and handles, for example) with masking tape.
