How Do You Paint Floor Joists For A Basement Ceiling?
If installation of a drop ceiling or other ceiling treatment is not in the cards for your basement remodeling project, it is possible to mask and even beautify exposed floor joists with white paint. Joists and pipes can virtually disappear once painted uniformly white. How you paint the joists is important in two respects: ease and speed of the job, and treatment of pipes and electrical lines. Select the proper paint. Use water-based latex paint in a flat finish. Avoid using oil-based paints because of the noxious and potentially dangerous fumes produced by these products. Do not choose a semi or full gloss finish because the light reflection on glossy paints will draw too much attention to the ceiling. You want the ceiling to “go away,” not attract attention. Employ a power spray painter for the project. Spraying the ceilings, rather than painting them with a brush or roller, will make the job go much faster and considerably reduce neck strain.
