First of all, if you want the paint to adhere to the wood properly and last a long time, you need to either rent a buffer and get some 100-120 grit screens or hire someone to screen the floor for you. You will then need to clean the floor (large broom w/ towel folded over the top) twice, dampening the towel with mineral spirits to remove all dust and debris. Wait about 10 minutes for any mineral spirits to completely dry, then use 1/4″-1/2″ painters tape to tape off the squares. The easiest way to do that is to use a measuring tape and pencil to divide the room up on the perimeter of the floor to use as a guide for your tape. Make sure to roll over the tape to assure there are no air bubbles!! You may have to paint two or even three times depending on the color and coverage of the paint you purchase.
