Microsoft Excel is a part of the Microsoft Office suite and is the most widely used spreadsheet program. The XLS file extension commonly represents spreadsheet files created by a Microsoft Excel version prior to Excel 2007. The 2007 version uses a different file format, XLSX, but still fully supports XLS files. Generally, you need install Microsoft Office before opening those files.
