Word provides a number of different types of formats for saving a document. Many people choose to save their files with a “doc” extension. This preserves all of the Word formatting that applies to the document. There may be times when a person saves a document with an “rtf” extension, which makes the document a rich text format document. Word can easily open a rich text format document as long as the user knows where the document is stored.
