Here are instructions on how to stretch a canvas that will survive well beyond your great grandchildren’s lifetimes! Take the stretcher strips and put them together to make your frame. Be sure that it is perfectly square. Use a T-square or a carpenters square to check your angles. Remember to purchase quality stretcher strips or make them yourself using a good quality wood. Next up, take your belgian linen and cut it down to the appropriate size. Always, always leave extra! (Linen is the best support for oil painting, as linseed oil comes from pressed flax seeds and linen comes from the flax plant) Beginning on any side and in the center, staple one staple. Go to the opposite side, stretch, and staple. Go to the side, stretch slightly, and staple. Go to the opposite side of that, stretch, and staple.
