How Do You Move To New York City?
The Big Apple is calling you. But you think it might be easier to climb Mt. Everest than move there. It’s easier than you think. If you can type, you can temp. Large temp agencies have display ads in the Sunday New York Times. Many have branches in other cities, and you can test on software remotely, which might enable you to have something lined up when you arrive. You need a place to live. Getting a roommate is easiest, finding your own place is tougher. Try Craigslist for leads on rooms for rent, or try a hostel if you don’t mind sharing a bathroom with strangers. You just need a bed until you get set up. For permanent housing, narrow down your neighborhoods. In Manhattan, the Yorkville area (east side, north of 86th St., South of 96th St.) is much more affordable than downtown. There are also great neighborhoods north of 96th – Inwood, Harlem, East Harlem, Hudson Heights. Consider living outside of Manhattan – Queens and Brooklyn are great, and areas of the South Bronx are drawing
