How Do You Move A Light Switch?
Moving a light switch that is in a bad location is not that difficult. You may want to lower it or move the switch to a different wall. It can even be placed in another room. Follow these steps to move a light switch. Turn the power to the switch off at the breaker. This is a critical step. Verify that the electricity is off by turning the switch to the on position, nothing should turn on. A volt meter can be used for this. Unscrew the switch from the wall. Pull it away but leave the wires attached. Cut a hole in the drywall where the new switch will be moved to. Trace the electrical outlet box with a pencil. Use a razor knife to cut the hole. Run a new 14 gauge wire from the hole you just made to the old electrical box. If you need to pass wall studs then you will need to cut a 1″ strip out of the drywall for the new wire to follow. This will have to be patched later. Push the wire into the new box. Install the new box by pushing it into the wall. Turn the tabs to lock it into place.
