Like most drums, congas are usually measured by the diameter of their heads. There are, however, many other measures that affect the sound as well as the portability of the drum. The height, maximum width and width at the bottom can give you a good idea of what kind of sound a conga will make. A conga with fat sides and a tapered bottom will give a warm, resonant tone whereas a conga with straighter sides will give a crisp, dry sound with a lot of projection. Hold a ruler or tape measure straight across the conga head to measure the diameter. This is the most important measurement, since the diameter of the head determines how high or low the pitch is. Multiply the diameter of the head by 3.14 to get an approximate measurement of the circumference. For example, if your conga head is 10 inches in diameter, its circumference is about 31.4 inches.
