How Do You Measure The Distance Between Cities?
Many computer programs and websites allow you to input two cities and calculate the distance between them. If you don’t have access to a computer or a global positioning system navigation device, you can still find out how far it is between two places with the help of a map or atlas and a little bit of math. Locate both cities on the map by using the legend on the bottom. Most maps are labeled with a grid of letters and numbers. You can find the city listed next to its location, such as A1 or E17. Once you find the city, mark it with the sticky note or coin so that you will be able to find it later. Find the map scale, usually in one of the bottom corners of either the map or page of the atlas that you are using. The scale usually includes the distance on the map in inches, and a conversion of that to either yards or miles depending on the area covered by the map. Write down this number on the scrap paper. Place your ruler over your coin or sticky note markers, with the inches side fac
