How do you measure the boiling point of different substances?

0

When you start heating a liquid all the energy you add to the liquid goes into heating the sample to it’s boiling point so the temperature rises. Once you have reached the boiling point the temperature stays constant, because the energy you add to the system goes into converting molecules in the liquid from liquid to gaseous state. So if you have a pure liquid the boiling point is the temperature of the liquid as it boils. If you have a mixture of two or more liquids then the mixture will start to boil at the boiling point of the liquid with the lowest boiling point. The temp will stay the same untill all of that compound has been boiled off and there is none left. The temp will then rise to the boiling pointof the next liquid and the same thing will happen. Intermolecular forces between different molecules in the mixture can effect the boiling point, however, but the temp for each will remain constant while boiling. This process is used extensively in chemistry to purify liquids by co
