You can measure the pH of water using litmus paper or a pH meter. The pH scale is used to show the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. It ranges from zero to 14. A pH of seven means the solution is neutral, a pH greater than seven means the solution is alkaline and a pH less than seven means the solution is acidic. Pure water is neutral and should have a pH of exactly seven. Rarely is water perfectly pure, so measuring the pH of your water can partially indicate the level of contaminants within it. Obtain strips of litmus paper. You can purchase litmus paper at many science hobby shops or online sources (see Resources). Dip a strip of litmus paper into your water sample and then remove it. It does not need to soak for any amount of time. It will change color within a minute or two. Consult the color chart that came with your litmus paper.
