How Do You Measure & Cut Door & Window Trim?
There are many ways to trim out windows and doors, depending on the type of trim and how complicated you want it to get. One of the simplest, and best-looking, methods is to use flat wall trim and make miter cuts (as on a picture frame), which gives a nice, square corner. The process is generally the same for windows and doors, except that the bottom edge of the door trim doesn’t have to be mitered, but rather cut straight across. Measure the top width of the opening on the edge of the casing. (The casing is formed by the flat boards that form the perimeter around the opening, with the wide side of the boards facing into the opening and the edge of the boards facing into the room.) Hold the tape 1/4 inch up from the bottom edge of the casing. Take the measurement from 1/4 inch inward on both vertical edges of the casing on either side. Transfer the measurement to the down-facing side of a piece of trim, making two marks with at least a few inches of spare space on the outside of each m
