Learning how to make wood pellets has sometimes been called an art more than a science. Making wood pellets and other biomass pellets is a simple process but in order to make quality pellets you will need some specialized knowledge. Pellets can be made from wood, paper, cardboard, straw, alfalfa, grain, corn husks, corn stalks, grass clippings, leaves and many other forms of biomass. People started making pellets from materials like grain and alfalfa over a century ago for animal feed. It wasn’t until the 70’s that some pellet manufacturers learned how to make wood pellets that could be used for heating. The process for making pellets for any form of biomass is basically the same but we will focus on making wood pellets here. A pellet is simply a compressed form of the original material that is held together by binding agents that are naturally occurring in the material or are added from another source. The raw material is compressed by a roller that rolls across a die and squeezes the
