Although you can purchase wax for encaustic wax painting, many artists prefer to make their own. When making your own wax, you can control the specific shades, as well as the amounts of those colors that you create. This way you can avoid having to much dark green and not enough red to complete your next series of planned paintings. Measure a small amounts of wax into each pot and heat it to melting point. Beeswax melts at 62 to 65 degrees Celsius. Grind up the Damar resin and stir them into the wax. The proportion of wax to Damar resin is 85 percent wax to 15 percent resin. Add pigment. If you use oil paints, first let them dry out on a paper towel. You do not want to have any extra oils added to your encaustic wax. You may also use dry pigments, similar to what you use for coloring candles. Mix this all together, and pour it into a mold. You can use small candle molds or chalk molds. A mold simply needs to be a small enough that you can easily hold the resulting molded colored encaus
