Trumpet mutes can be expensive but they are sometimes necessary. So why not have a little fun and make one yourself Step 1 First off we need to find a bottle for your trumpet mute. The best bottle that I have found is a 1 liter soda bottle, but you can use anything that you want. You know that the bottle is a good size if when you put it in the bell of the trumpet the bottle fits snugly but not to snugly that it gets wedged in there. Step 2 Now we are going to cut the neck of the bottle off. Depending on how the bottle is shaped will determine how much of the neck you will cut off. You should cut the neck low enough so that you have what resembles a cone (the one end should be larger than the end that has the drinking opening). Step 3 Now we are going to cut the cork into 4 strips. We want to cut the strips so that they are roughly 2 inches long and about 1/4 inch wide.
