In a large bowl with the electric mixer at medium speed, cream 1/4 of margarine or butter. Gradually add the sugar and the eggs. Blend well. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together before adding to the creamed mixture. Melt the remaining 1/2 cup of margarine or butter and pour into the 9-inch square pan. Sprinkle brown sugar over the margarine or butter. Place pineapple slice on top of the brown sugar. Carefully pour the cake batter over the pineapple. Bake for 50 minutes. While the cake is baking, boil the 1/4 cup of water in a small pan. Stir the sugar into the water until it dissolves. Add the rum and let it cool. Once the cake is finished baking, pour the glaze on top of the hot cake and allow to cool slightly before placing onto a serving platter.
