How Do You Make Teaching Swimming Fun For Boys Aged 8-16?
A coach a swim team, so I prefer to play games that are more fitness based. But one that all the kids always want to do is T-shirt relays. It is just a simple relay race, kids divide up into even teams and the first swimmer of each team puts on a big, oversized T-shirt. On your “go”, the first boy dives in and swims a length (or 2, or out to a certain point and back, etc) When he reaches his teammate, the boys stand facing each other, arms length apart and hold each others arms at the elbows. Games, games and more games. Sharks and Minnows are a long time favorite. Someone would stand outside of the pool with their backs to the water while the “Minnows” would stay in the water, but hang onto the pool’s edge. When they feel safe, they’ll swim across, doing their best to not make noise, because if the “shark” hears the noise, he turns around and dives in, then tries to tag the “Minnow”. If the Minnow is tagged, he becomes the new shark. The shark is not allowed to face the pool and could only turn if he thinks someone is going. The “Minnows” don’t have to go in groups. Easiest way to get across without being heard: Slowly go under water and push against the wall, coming up on the other side. Usually silent. Also, stress this point to the kids, they’re not allowed to tell “shark” when the “Minnow” is swimming because that will just start fights. Marco Polo is also a good game, but depending on how many kids you have, it might not be as fun. You could also try “Whirlpool” where
