The first step in creating a strong dovetail is to plane the two pieces of wood you are going to use. That way the boards will come together at a smooth angle. The next step is to mark the shoulder line of each piece of wood equal to adjoining piece of stock. After you have your wood all to correct size and smoothness you want to mark the ends of the tails at the desired angles. You always want to have markings in place or you run the risk of producing an uneven joint. Now that you have the pattern drawn out you can begin to cut the tails with a dovetail saw.
