Building a set of deck steps may seem at first glance a simple task. However, building steps that meet building codes and are comfortable to use can be tricky, and a do-it-yourself homeowner needs to follow some logical steps. With some careful planning you can carry out this project and increase the functionality of your deck. Determine the rise, run, and tread depth for your steps. Measure the distance from ground level to the top of the deck (we’ll call this “D”). Divide D by 7.5 in order to get the total number of steps that will be needed. Then calculate the riser height of each step by taking D and dividing by the number of steps. Decide on a comfortable tread depth for your steps; recommended widths are between 10 inches and 14 inches.
