Specimen boxes are a critical component of storing, displaying and protecting a pin-mounted insect collection. A variety of sturdy, covered boxes can be adapted for storing specimens. The materials required to make specimen boxes are available in most craft, hobby and department stores. Box size can be selected to accommodate the number of specimens that are to be stored or displayed with sufficient room for labels and handling. Boxes should not exceed 19 inches by 16 inches by 3 inches if they are to be stored in a standard insect storage cabinet. Select a covered box at least 1 1/2 inches deep from the upper edge to the bottom of the box. Select a length and width that will accommodate the number of labeled specimens with room for handling.
