How Do You Make Silk Screening Safer?
Silk screening allows you to transfer a painted design onto paper, fabric or just about any other surface. Years ago, many silk screening materials were more toxic than they are today, and paints and emulsions could be hazardous if inhaled. Now, silk screening is relatively safe, but it is still important to take certain precautions to ensure that you are doing it as safely as possible. Check the labels on your chemicals to make sure they are nontoxic. Many old materials were hazardous if inhaled, but make sure your photo emulsions and paints are safe. Use fans in the area where you are using photo emulsion, regardless of the materials you’re using—old or new. Make sure the air is circulating consistently, so you don’t end up working amid fumes. Make sure to keep your pressure cleaner pointed away from you if using one to clean your screen. The pressure can be enough to create serious injuries. If any of your materials are toxic, wear gloves and eye protection throughout the process
