How Do You Make Rock Candy Crystals?
Rock Candy is delicious, easy to make, beautiful to look at and fun for the whole family! It can take up to a week for the finished piece, but watching the process is half the fun. Bring water to boil in medium sized saucepan. Add sugar, one cup at a time, stirring well until it has dissolved completely before adding more. Once all the sugar has been added, simmer syrup until smooth, about 5 minutes. If you want to add food coloring or flavoring, do it now. Add two or three drops of color and stir well. If you decide to add flavor use one or two drops of an extract and stir well. (I have had the best result with peppermint, but plain is the best!) Remove syrup from heat and let it sit for about 5-7 minutes. While syrup is resting, prepare your string or skewer. Wet one end of the string or skewer about two inches long and roll in granulated sugar. This gives the crystals a “starting pad” to grab onto. Pour the syrup into a clean glass or jar. Insert sugared string into the jar, letting
