How Do You Make Reading Homework Fun?
In upper elementary grades, middle school and high school, many teachers assign reading homework. Sometimes the students are all reading the same book and sometimes the teacher just requires 15 to 30 minutes of reading any kind of book each night. For the reluctant reader, here are some ideas to make reading more fun. Draw it. If your child would rather color than crack a book, try to combine the two. If he is reading a chapter book, have him illustrate one of the key scenes in each chapter. As the weeks progress, he’ll be creating a picture book of the story. Check with the teacher to see if this side project might qualify for extra credit. Pick a word. First, decide on an appropriate reward that your child can earn points towards. Be sure to come up with a few different levels of points, such as 0 to 10 points, 11 to 20 points and 20 or more points. Then, explain to her how she can earn points.
