Purses can be expensive, but they’re easy to make, even without a pattern. The bare bones of a purse is a bag with a handle. You can add compartments or zippers on the inside or the outside, or line the purse. This project is a small, self-lined drawstring tote with a basket base. It’s so easy it could be a fun project for a child. Measure around the wicker basket. That is the width plus ½ inch for a seam. Cut a rectangle out of the twill material that’s the width of the basket plus seam allowance and 19 inches long. Sew a ½ inch seam the length of the material, trim, steam iron the seam open and fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Iron the folded material. Measure down 2 inches from the top edge and mark with a dressmaker’s pencil. Mark all the way around the purse top for the grommets, which should be evenly spaced. You can use eight grommets.
