How Do You Make Pure Vanilla Extract?
Have you always wanted to use real vanilla extract, but just couldn’t justify paying for it? Now you can make it yourself, for 10% of what it costs shelf-price, and it even tastes better! Get yourself some vanilla beans. Personally, I purchase mine through Ebay. They’re less expensive this way, and they’re generally of higher quality. You’ll only need 2-3 beans for this recipe. I provide a link at the bottom of this article. Get yourself a bottle of Vodka. You don’t need to spend much on a high quality brand, we’re just going to be turning it into vanilla! Higher proof vodkas will create a stronger extract. Vodka is generally used because it creates a smoother flavor for the vanilla, as opposed to rum or bourbon, which tend to add some of their own flavors. Put 2-3 beans into the bottle of vodka, seal it tightly, and let rest in a cool, dry place (out of the sun!) for at -least- a month.
