How Do You Make Playing Marbles From Stone?
Stone marbles are part of many game-playing traditions, both ancient and modern, from all across the world. In Germany, they are made by breaking up hard stone into small pieces and grinding off the hard edges under a horizontal grinding wheel. The Cherokee use sandstone to rasp and shape small pieces of stone into spheres. The simplest way to make stone marbles yourself is to use a rock tumbler and rock shaping paper, which is similar to sandpaper. Soft stones, like soapstone or sandstone, are the easiest to shape, but any stone can be used. Raw semi-precious stones can make beautiful marbles after they are polished. Break the rocks into quarter-sized pieces with the hammer. Do this on asphalt or concrete while wearing safety goggles. Put 10 stones at a time into the rock tumbler with the coarse rock grit.
