How Do You Make Picture Cards For A Speech Delayed Child?
Children with a speech delay may understand you and have an idea of how to respond, but their language may be lagging behind. While some children easily pick up on baby or child sign language, others need a more visual way of communicating. The child who has trouble uttering clear words and phrases may be prone to pulling and tugging on people to get their attention. The child may also rely on gestures, not always understood by non-immediate family members. Ease a child’s frustration, as well as your own, by making a set of familiar photo cards to help the child communicate wants, needs and responses to your requests. Spend the day with your child and record important phrases and words that are commonplace in your home. Write down the words in a notebook. Include objects, people and activities. Draw a line down the center of a piece of card stock, with the paper in a vertical direction. Fold the paper into thirds, making three horizontal folds across the vertical line down the center.
