Party hats are a staple for many children’s celebrations. An economical and creative activity is to have each child create his own party hat. Party hats can be simply made using a few basic materials. The traditional party hat is cone-shaped; another option is to create a pirate-shaped hat using the same materials. Children will be kept busy with this activity and pictures can capture the creative celebration before party-goers return home with their creation and goody bags. Roll the sheet of construction paper into a cone (with a pointed tip) and secure the edge in place with tape. Alternatively, you can download a template (see Resource) and cut out a form. Place the hat on your child’s head to check the fit. Loosely loop elastic from one side of the hat, under the chin to the other side of the hat to gauge a comfortable length of cord.
