How Do You Make Litmus PH Paper?
Litmus PH paper strips are used to test whether a substance is acidic or alkaline (a base). Commercial litmus PH paper strips typically use dyes from lichens; however, paper strips can be made on your own using red cabbage and filter paper. You will end up with grayish colored strips. The strip will turn red in the presence of acids and will turn green in the presence of bases. The liquid being tested can be blotted onto these paper strips using a dropper, or the strip can be dipped. Finely chop a red cabbage. Measure the cabbage and place it in a blender. Add distilled water to the blender. Use 1/2 the measurement of the red cabbage to determine how much water to use. Blend for two minutes or until you have a fine, consistent mixture. Place the mixture in a ceramic or earthenware dish. Heat the cabbage-water mixture in the microwave and cook for at least three minutes, until you see it starting to steam.
