How Do You Make Learning Science Fun?
Learning science is fun with varied activities throughout a science unit. Science instruction with healthy doses of fun can increase students’ motivation, positive attitude and willingness to participate in science class. A teacher can bring fun into science teaching through simple activities and projects that engage the young and bring out the fun in science. Open each scientific unit with a song. Write a song using the science unit’s vocabulary to the tune of a popular pop song or nursery rhyme. Print out lyrics and practice singing as a class. Revisit the song often during the unit and invite students to change the lyrics as the science unit evolves. Engage students with a hands-on experiment for each concept taught. For example, after taking notes and practicing chemical reactions, have students complete a lab where they create chemical reactions with kitchen ingredients such as baking soda and vinegar, or more excitingly, cola and Mentos candy.
