Making your own laundry soap with Crisco is good for you, the environment and your pocketbook. Making laundry soap is not too hard and can even be fun. Prepare the soap mold, you can use a wooden soap mold, a new, small kitty litter pan, or a piece of pvc piper with an end cap. Some people even use Pringles cans. If you use a wooden mold or kitty litter pan , simply put a garbage bag over it to protect the wood and make soap removal easier. Measure 16oz of distilled water into your large Pyrex measuring cup. Using distilled water insures that the lye will not have an unpredictable reaction to tap water. Put on your rubber gloves. Carefully measure the 6.4oz of lye, using the diet scale. Be careful not to get any on your skin or anywhere else. It can burn you very quickly. If you do get it on your skin rinse with vinegar immediately, do not use water.
