For a green alternative to harsh chemical based laundry detergents, make your own laundry soap from rendered tallow. Set aside an afternoon to turn rendered tallow into bars of soap, but with a few extra steps, the tallow soap can become laundry soap. Place the rendered tallow and palm oil into a stainless steel pot and heat over medium heat until its melted, then remove the pot from the heat. The ratio of tallow to palm oil should be 2 to 1 on average. Pour the lye into a pitcher of water and stir until the mixture is no longer cloudy. Carefully pour the mixture into the contents of the stainless steel pot. Stir with a wooden spoon until the soap reaches trace, and then pour the liquid soap into molds. Simple bar soap molds work best. Cover the bars with plastic wrap for 24 hours and allow them to sit in a cool and well-ventilated room.
