How Do You Make Grandmas Homemade Apple Butter?
Fall is almost upon us and their is always an overabundance of apples in the Midwest. In addition to making the traditional apple pies, apple crisp, candied apples and apple sauce, why not make apple butter. This recipe makes 5 pints of apple butter and you will enjoy this delightful spread all winter long. Don’t ask me why they call call this butter, since there is no butter in it. Could it be that, by the time you finished making this recipe, the consistency is like butter? Slowly cook apples with apple cider until soft. Put cooked apples through a strainer. add brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice. Cook on low heat, and strain again. keep cooking and straining until there are no lumps and the consistency is fairly smooth. Close to apple sauce, but not as moist. Place in sterilized jars and put lid on, turn upside down for 1 hour. This will help seal the lid. Turn right side up, and store in cool dry place.
