How Do You Make Gluhwein (Spiced, Mulled Wine)?
One of my favorite memories of Christmas in Germany was drinking gluhwein at the Christmas Markets. Traditionally, gluhwein was created from wine that went sour, so by heating it and adding some spice and sugar, it became more palatable. This is the most authentic recipe I have tried. Pour the wine into a large pot, or a crock pot, and begin to heat over low heat. As it begins to warm, add sugar and spices. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Add the brandy and heat thoroughly, but do not allow the mixture to boil. Float the lemon and orange slices on top of the mixture. Steep for about 1 hour over low heat, taking care the mixture does not boil. Add more sugar at this time if necessary. Apple juice can also be added is your gluhwein is too strong. Serve hot and garnish with orange slices or a cinnamon stick.
