Making one batch of these usually takes me about half an hour. It may not be worth the effort for some of you and I certainly understand that. I actually stopped buying tortillas because around here, they kept getting more and more expensive until they popped right out of my budget. The boys missed them though, so I looked into making them myself to save some money. I just throw everything in my kitchen Aid mixer and let it mix until most of the dough forms into a ball. If you don’t have a mixer, then you’ll want to cut the shortening into the flour and then mix in the water until you have a dough. Knead it until it holds together well and you can form it into a ball. I then let it sit while I heat up my electric griddle. Using the griddle allows me to cook two tortillas at a time, but you can use a pan on the stove if you don’t have a griddle. You do not need to grease the griddle AT ALL, they will not stick.
