Tempera dye has been used for centuries. It was a favorite of many Byzantine and Gothic artists. This is because tempera dye is made from natural objects. It was, and still is, fairly inexpensive to make and extremely durable. Tempera paint works well when used on canvas, wood, canvas paper and canvas board. Carefully separate the egg yolk from the egg white. Discard the egg white. Leave the membrane around the egg yolk intact. Wash the egg yolk under slow running water to remove any remaining egg white, or gently rub it with a paper towel to remove any excess egg white. Place the egg yolk over the top of a bowl and pierce it with either a toothpick or a fork. Pour the egg yolk into a wide mouth baby food jar. Stir the egg yolk with the fork, and add two tablespoons of water and 1/3 teaspoon of white vinegar, and stir.
