How Do You Make Dog Rawhides From Yams?
Dog treats are expensive and they aren’t always that good for dogs. My Sophie can’t chew beef rawhides, but she gets really upset if the other dogs get them and she doesn’t. My solution was to make yam rawhides for my dogs. Select some nice, big yams and scrub them to remove any dirt. Use a sharp knife to cut the yams into rounds of about an eighth to a quarter of an inch. While the yam rawhides would have a more traditional appearance if they were cut lengthwise, I usually cut them into rounds because it is easier to cut yams widthwise. Place the yam slices on the dehydrator trays so that they are not touching each other. Leaving room for the air to circulate allows them to dry more quickly and evenly. Dry the yams on the veggie setting (about 165 degrees) for three hours and then check to see how hard they are. Depending on the humidity, they may be done at this point. I usually have to dry the yam rounds for eight hours to get the consistency of traditional rawhides.
