How Do You Make Dirty Dishwater Dogs?
Have you ever enjoyed a hot dog from a hot dog vendor? You know how extra tasty those hot dogs are, in a soft steamed bun, topped with sauerkraut and mustard and served in a little paper tray or napkin. When I worked in New York City, a co-worker referred to hot dog stand hot dogs as dirty dishwater dogs, because they sit in a pan of hot, steamy water all day long, slowly cooking, until the water resembles murky dishwater. You can get the great taste of slow cooked dirty dishwater dogs at home. Allow at least one hour to cook. Place hot dogs in a large pot of cold water and place on medium high heat. When the water starts to just simmer, lower the heat to LOW, cover the pot and let them simmer for a least one full hour. They must not boil, just barely simmer. If the water starts to gets low, you can add a little to the pot during cooking. After an hour, remove the lid from the pot-the water should look like dirty dishwater.
