Dial-up Internet seems like a thing of the past to most people. However, there are still many people who have it, even if they are in the minority. For some, DSL is not available in their area, and for others, the cost of a faster connection is cost-prohibitive. Whatever the reason, dial-up can be excruciatingly slow compared to DSL; fortunately, there are ways to make a dial-up connection run faster–and as fast as DSL. Step 1 Minimize programs that use the connection. Weather programs and instant messengers are a few examples of programs that use the Internet connection in the background. These programs slow Internet browsing by tying up precious resources. Most of these programs appear as icons in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, next to the time on the toolbar.
