How Do You Make Detailed Molds With Silicone Rubber?
Silicone rubber is an ideal material for making highly detailed molds of different objects, allowing the creation of many copies. There are two main types of silicone rubber: tin cure and platinum cure. Tin cure is cheaper and easier to work with, but your mold will not have as long a life. Platinum silicone lasts much longer, but is more expensive and is much more susceptible to contaminants such as sulfur and latex. The material that you choose will depend on the requirements of the mold that you are making. Prepare your work area by laying down plastic tarps, butcher paper, or newspaper. Silicone will bond to porous surfaces such as wood, carpeting, and even some stones. If this happens it will be very difficult to remove. Seal the object with a few thin coats of acrylic enamel spray if it is made of a porous material. Once this is done, spray it with a few coats of mold release, a product available at many art and hobby stores. Silicone typically does not bond to nonporous surfaces
