Aluminum or tin cans from your pantry are the perfect craft materials for making lanterns for your patio, deck or garden. You can punch holes in the cans randomly or you can create a patterned design on the cans. Embellish the outside of your can lantern with paint, copper foil or beaded wire mesh to create decorative accents to fit in with your outdoor living style. Remove any labels from the aluminum or tin cans. Clean the cans thoroughly with household soap and water. Dry the outside of the cans. Fill the cans with water. Place them in the freezer until the water is solid ice. The ice provides a solid surface for hammering nails in the cans. Otherwise, your cans may dent when you apply pressure with the hammer and the nail. Tape a template of your desired design to the outside of the can.
