Well – there is no need to worry, for below are steps showing you how to make cornbread from scratch. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Put 2 tablespoons of shortening in a cast iron skillet and put in oven. Once melted, take from oven. Put 2 cups of white self-rising cornmeal and 1 whole egg in a bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of baking powder. Add 1/3 cup of sugar. (optional) Add 1 cup of buttermilk. Mix all together, including the melted shortening. Pour into cast iron skillet and put in oven. Bake cornbread until it is done. This is the finished product. Slice into quarters. Slice the quarters into one-fifths. Eat alone with a little butter or with a meal.
