How do you make chocolate-covered pretzels?
Salty-sweet chocolate covered pretzels make a perfect and easy treat for holiday gift giving, party treats, or just for snacking on during family game night. Pretzel rods or pretzel twists are easy to find in most any grocery store. Just look in the chip or snack aisle.
To make dipped pretzel rods, you will need:
- a package of pretzel rods
- one bag of semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips (melting chocolate can be used, but I prefer the taste of good-quality chocolate chips)
- sprinkles (optional)
Cover your countertop or a cookie sheet with waxed paper.
Melt chocolate chips in a double boiler over low heat, or in a microwave-safe bowl for 1 minute, stir, and continue at 30 second intervals, stirring after each, until melted. Dip 3/4 of the pretzel rod into the chocolate, using a spoon to help if needed. Place on waxed paper. Add sprinkles, mini candies, etc. if wanted. For a chocolate drizzle, melt a contrasting color of chocolate (peanut butter chips or vanilla flavored chips work well!) and spoon into the corner of a sandwich baggie. Snip the very end of the corner and squeeze to drizzle over the top of the rods. These can be put in the refrigerator until set, but I’ve had good results leaving them out until they’re ready to bag up or store. These can be put into clear treat bags and tied with a coordinated ribbon or raffia. Add a handmade card for a final touch.
Pretzel twist can be made the same way, but you’ll need to use a fork or small tongs to get a full covered pretzel. A good alternative is to scoop a mound of chocolate with one half of the pretzel, then lay it on the waxed paper to set. These can also be sprinkled with decorative, edible sprinkles.
Store the chocolate covered pretzels in an air-tight container.
The pretzel rods can be used in conjunction with a themed birthday party: magic wands for a magic or Harry Potter party or sprinkled with pink sanding sugar to make a fairy princess wand. They also add a nice touch displayed on a dessert buffet in a clear glass like a pretzel bouquet.
Chocolate covered pretzels make great gifts and are very tasty. They are also quite easy to make. • Put wax paper on a cookie sheet. Make sure there is storage room in your refrigerator. • Put the chocolate wafers in a saucepan on the lowest heat setting and stir frequently until melted. • Take pretzels and dip them in the chocolate using tongs or other suitable tool. Once the pretzel is half covered in chocolate take it out. Tap the excess chocolate off. • Put the finished pretzels on the wax paper. Once the sheet is full put it in the refrigerator or outside until the chocolate is solid. • If you want, you can put melted chocolate wafers in a bag and snip off a corner Drizzle the chocolate over the pretzels.
Take your melting chocolate 1/2 a bag at a time melt in microwave for 45-60 sec (do not over heat) Pour melted chocolate into mold (do not over fill) Pour some on a paper plate Roll end of pretzel on plate before placing in mold Then roll pretzel in mold and set in Put pretzels in mold in the fridge (about an Hour) When chocolate is hard carefully lift pretzels out of mold Cut off any excess chocolate with knife If you would like to place any kind of candy decor on top of pretzel as well use left over melted chocolate as glue (you may need to reheat) If adding decor you need to pace back in fridge to set again, when chocolate under decal appears hard they are done. Then place bags over chocolate covered end and tie ribbon. Store in fridge until use. Repeat as needed. Chocolate covered pretzels make a great party favor. Kids and adults love the taste of salty and sweet together. They are easy to make and you can start preparing them quite a while before the event you are using them for.
